Hot!

We managed to get all the way through May without a 100 degree day but as soon as June 1st clicked round the heat was on. Of course all the native species are more than capable of dealing with the desert environment but some are just a lot more expressive about it than others. None more so than the wonderful Antelope Ground Squirrel who sprawls as flat as possible against any remotely cool surface, in this instance, a shady spot of my patio. Maybe I should offer him a cocktail?

That is very cute. I still have no idea how hot is hot out there. Some day I hope to find out!

This behavior happens here in Ohio where we live. On certain days the gray squirrels will flatter out on anything cooler than their belly. It doesn't have to be heat hot for them to do that and a sticky hot day makes them do it too.

I have a feeling that if you and I were to do this, we'd walk away with burned bellies. The heat is on, isn't?

What a fun capture! I guess he has found a way to cool off.

Right now we are averaging between 102 and 105 each day Roberta but there is no humidity at this time of year so it makes it slightly less daunting than it sounds!

It is great isn't it Abraham? I never tire of watching them sprawled about :)

I think you're right Brenda! We just don't have enough fur on our bellies to get away with it!!! ;)
It certainly is toasty.

These little guys are super smart Eileen, they have learnt all the tricks. We have one that regularly dives into our pool and swims straight over to our frog ramp and climbs out! Nothing like a quick dip to cool down!

Hi

A great photo and if the cocktail has an umbrella he would probably like that as well.

Excellent suggestion Guy - I'll get on it right away! ;)

How cute, I've never seen a ground squirrel do that. For me they are so camera shy, I can barely catch a glimpse of them running away.

Really Diane I am surprised, they love to sprawl around all over the place here, especially in the heat :)
