They're Back!
Nothing makes me happier than the arrival of the Purple Martins, it is a sure sign of changing seasons, summer has arrived and the air will soon be filled with their delightful chatter as they teach their off spring to be masters of the sky.
I wonder why they are called purple? I caught some photos of them sitting on fence cables in Sonoita - not a sight we have up here. Thanks for sharing your photo and clearing up my doubts as to what they are (even when Sibleys & Petersons say 'purple martin', I doubt myself!).
I think Brenda it is because the males look a sort of purply black in certain light. They are certainly not what I would think of as purple so I totally understand your confusion :)

I saw a pair of them yesterday, I love the funny noises they make!
