Lichen only grows where the air quality is good so what could be better than finding it in your own yard?
This fascinating life form comes in so many shapes and shades,
each one is a unique, natural work of art.

You have featured something that often goes unnoticed.
I didn't know that it required good air as we have a lot of it on our trees but it's only greenish, not that rusty color...Must be wonderful to escape Chicago winters for here... Michelle
Nice variety of lichen. I didn't realize lichen meant the air was good. Interesting fact!
Wonderful captures, the lichen and the pretty colors. Great post and information. Have a great weekend!
I didn't know it was so colorful. I see why lichen is a great subject to study.
Great collection of lichens. Surprisingly, many look familiar. I say "surprisingly" because my backyard in the Arkansas Ozarks looks very different from yours.
Thanks Rebecca, yes I love finding the little details in the natural world that are often missed.
Hi Michelle, There are so many beautiful colours of lichen, I wonder if it has anything to do with the type of rock?
It is a wonderful winter bolt-hole to get some warm air and sunshine from time to time.
Yes EGWoW, they are very particular about the air quality.
Thanks Eileeninmd I hope you had a nice weekend too :)
Hi Leora,
Aren't the colours stunning? My less than stellar camera skills didn't really do them justice unfortunately.
Wow that is so neat Marvin, who would think such different environments would have the same lichens!
