Learning The Ropes

This fledgling Verdin was right outside my front door one morning so I sat quietly watching it while I drank my tea. It seemed to have learned well from its parents and was foraging away very industriously in the mesquite tree.

Spring Colour

It has been a mild winter with some good rain and now we are seeing the results, early spring blooms. This beautiful Verdin seemed quite taken with the aloe flowers.

What Took You So Long?

I know the Verdins love fresh apple and orange so I try to keep them supplied. I had just put this one up, walked two or three steps away and then turned to look back, and there he was, already perched, about to tuck in to the apple. He must have been sitting watching me put up the feeder. Happy to be of service Mr (or Mrs) Verdin!

Verdin

The Verdin is another of natures small but feisty characters and they always make me smile. We seem to have a lot of them in the yard and now that I have discovered how much they love freshly sliced oranges I know exactly how to keep them around.

Don't Make Him Angry!

I have posted before about the tiny tyrant that lives at the south west corner of my house. He is very fierce and chases all comers from his domain be they bird, make-believe or human.


One morning as I was passing 'His Lordship' was looking particularly angry.


Glaring up through the branches in a very focused manner


Then I realised why - someone had the AUDACITY to drink from his nectar feeder! Really!!!? What is the world coming to?


After several more very hard stares and a whole string of what I have to believe were hummingbird expletives, the little Verdin realised the error of it's ways and left the area.


Normal service has been resumed.

Nesting Time

I must admit I had a problem taking this picture because I was giggling so hard. When I first spotted this industrious little Verdin it's head was completely obscured by the large piece of nesting material it had collected. Irresistible :)
