Waiting

Every evening after dinner my husband and I go 'on safari' around our yard. This has special sentimental meaning for us as we first met when I was living in Zambia, working as a safari guide and he came on safari. Anyway - ancient history but we still continue our tradition of night safaris. During the rains there is a mass of activity of all shapes and sizes. We have many beautiful Arizona Blonde Tarantulas around the yard. This one has made her burrow right near our front door. Here she is waiting for supper to walk by!

A safari guide? Really? Now that sounds so interesting. Would love to hear more about that and how it relates to your living in the desert! Do those tarantulas bite?

A safari around your yard sounds wonderful. Cool sighting of the Tarantula. I hope it is not too hungry. Have a great evening!

Oh my! I have learned to like this spider since I know it eats scorpions!

Hi Roberta,
It doesn't really relate, other than an American came on safari and he is now my husband ;)

Tarantulas, like most things, will defend themselves if threatened. They have two forms of defense, they can shed the hairs from the end of their abdomen, these are slightly barbed and cause irritation. They can also inject venom via some fairly impressive fangs. The venom of this species is not lethal to humans.
That being said, these are not remotely aggressive tarantulas and are in fact quite shy and usually avoid human interaction.

Hi Eileen,
We certainly enjoy it although many people I know think we are more than a little crazy!!

Every organism has its place in the chain Kathie - that is what makes the natural world such an amazing thing. I hope you are enjoying your trip :)
